At my own initiative, I built an intranet web page designed to meet the needs of
approximately six developers. Included on this page were dynamic procedures and
dynamic record layouts which were downloaded from the mainframe and converted to
HTML format so developers could simply 'click' on the procedure or record layout
of interest. Thus I was able to update ~87 record layouts and ~233 procedures in
about 15 minutes. I was asked to merge "my" web page with the existing web page
in Lotus Notes), to be useful for our customers, specifically other departments.
Concurrently, I added Y2K information, Configuration Management Information, and
Tips & Tricks that might be useful to others. Eventually, I built an automated
process that would post various frequently used reports to the web page. It turns
out that the page has been most useful to several other groups for a variety of
reasons or features.
This page also uses generated HTML (using MS-Access and Access Basic) for portions
as well as some Javascript. I think the strength of both web pages is their
organization. Though my own site is embryonic, it does adequately demonstrate my ideas
regarding organization and utility. I consider this site to be
work-in-progress and a place to experiment with ideas.
